A Building Much Like Kimmel with One Key Difference
The University of London Union, or ULU for short, is a building that my friends and I often find ourselves in. It´s basically UL´s equivalent to the Kimmel Center. It´s a building that has many student events as well as a few places to eat. The biggest difference, at least in my mind, is that it also contains a bar, which I find pretty interesting. I couldn´t imagine what Kimmel would be like if it had a working bar in it.
Anyway, my friends and I often go there to grab a quick bite or a pint. We all have a required class Monday right nearby so we often go right before for dinner and sometimes after to hang out. It´s not exactly the most happening spot, but it´s a good place to meet local students and the food is cheap and good (I love the chili nachos) so we go a lot, being broke college students in an immensely expensive city.
The pub/restaurant is actually quite large, containing two large rooms to sit and eat and one room with a stage for performances and that also functinos as a dancefloor at night. There´s also a balcony, but we´ve never gone out there since its been pretty cold the entire semester. When we didn´t know London very well in the beginning of the semester, we would oftentimes come at night because we didn´t really know where else to go.
And actually the first time we went was during orientation. NYUL took us there for lunch and to show us around the university a bit. Since then, we´ve come quite a number of times, lately more to eat and just hang for a bit than anything else. Its very close to school so it´s always convenient to stop by for a bite to eat or a pint.
I do enjoy going to ULU sometimes, more because of the people I go with and its a decent place to talk to people than the place itself, but its still nice. The staff is always friendly, which is nice considering the debauchery they probably have to put up with some nights. We even have a loyalty card to get discounts on food and drinks and to get points so we can get certain things for free at some point.
And the food is incredibly cheap, at least compared to other places around London. Normally, if you eat out in London, you should expect to spend around ten pounds and many times more, but at ULU you can get a pretty solid meal for half that. I personally am extremely fond of the chili nachos, like a said before. Its a huge plate of chips and they dump tons of guacamole, salsa, cheese, jalapenos, chili, and sour cream on it and its only 4 pounds! Even writing about them is making me crave them.
Don´t ever get the wings though. I went to watch the Super Bowl there and of course I had to get some. You only get four for 2.50 so its not worth it at all.
My favorite time there was still probably the super bowl though. It was only the second week or so of classes so I didn´t know the kids too well yet, but we all wanted to watch the game and we thought ULU would be a solid place to go. I actually ended up having a lot of fun and got to know some kids pretty well that I still hang out with a bunch that night.
Overall I would say ULU is a ´great good place´and I would definitely recommend it for the cheap food. Its a good place to hang out before going out somewhere else and its solid for a quick cheap bite. If you ever want a glimpse of what a college student´s life is like in London, ULU is a great place.
